A safety inspection MUST be completed before being registered for the first time, regardless if it is a exempt model year. After the first year of registration, the ATV must follow the current safety inspection frequency of every other year. After it is eight(8) years old it will be required to have safety inspection every year.
The safety inspection Certificate, will have the 'ATV' watermark in the background. This watermark is present to assist the DMV with identifying the type of registration to Process.

A driver's license with a motorcycle endorsement (M) will permit a person to operate a street legal ATV as well as a motorcycle. For those who do not ride motorcycles and want to operate a street legal ATV they must apply for the motorcycle endorsement (M) by passing the written knowledge test and the riding test. Once all testing is completed the operator will have an (M) endorsement and a (4) restriction. Those with this "M4" endorsement and restriction will only be allowed to operate the ATV and not be permitted to operate motorcycles. (
Every ATV must be insured in order to operate as a street-legal ATV. The same insurance requirements that a motorcycle must have also apply to Street-legal ATV's.

An all-terrain type I or type II vehicle that meets the requirements of this section may be operated as a street-legal ATV on a street or highway that is a highway with one lane in each direction. Those highways that have the occasional passing lanes are still considered a highway with one lane in each direction. An operator of a street-legal all-terrain vehicle, when operating a street-legal all-terrain vehicle on a highway in accordance with this section, may not exceed the lesser of the posted speed limit or 45 miles per hour.
